Hello everyone, I just got back from a little solo tour through New England and I’m extremely grateful to everyone we met along the way. If you’re interested, our Friday show got a really nice writeup in the New Haven Independent.
We hope you’ll make it out to our upcoming New York shows. We have some special things planned and I’m grateful to be playing with the full ensemble again. April 24th is going to be a really special night with two sets. We’ll open up the night with our second performance of MOON before screening a program of early animated silent films titled Strange Animations. It’s going to be a beautiful evening of catharsis and release.
MOON is a semi-improvised opera in a made-up language that tells the story of a group of humans waking up on a strange planet and the challenges they face in the new society they build. Written by Devon Turchan of Perraneu Magazine, the lack of traditional language provides an opportunity for performers to express themselves freely.
Strange Animations will include early animated classics like Steamboat Willie, Felix the Cat, Gertie the Dinosaur, and others. Its a blend of the sweet and the strange that explores the thrill of artists inventing a new form.
We’re also looking to expand our community and I’ve posted a series of Open Calls for artists, performers, and volunteers at the bottom of this email. Please take a look if you are interested in getting more involved with our project, we have a few different opportunities.
4/24 Manhattan: Strange Animations and MOON
4/27 Brooklyn: Soup Show ft. Ghost Lotus, Krystal Vazquez, buddhababy and Dolan Morgan
5/2 Brooklyn/Queens: Strange Animations
Zine Submissions:
We are printing a zine through which we want to highlight pieces organized around the theme of "Weird Art, Good People." You may use this form to submit poetry, prose, visual art, essays, features, or anything else you think might work.
The zine will be printed in black ink on a few different colored papers on 8.5x11 paper folded lengthwise. Submissions are free and open until May 1st
Alternatively, you may email submissions to aesopssoundfables@gmail.com.
Performers and Writers:
Soup Dinner is a series of concerts and readings we’ve been hosting out of our apartment on Sunday nights for the last two years. We make a vegan minestrone soup that we serve to all attendees and collect donations for the artists. 100% of the proceeds go to the artists.
If you are interested in performing please fill out the form linked here with your information and we’ll reach out when we have an open slot.
Bear in mind, the apartment is small and the money collected tends to be relatively low. Shows are held roughly once a month and it may take some time for us to get back to you.
Volunteers:
If you’re interested in being a bigger part of our community, please consider reaching out about volunteering. We have big plans for the coming year and we are going to need people to help. If you want to help out, you can fill out the linked form or just email aesopssoundfables@gmail.com.
We’re also looking for people that want to just step in and help out for a day or two, we’re also looking for people that want to get involved on a deeper level and make arts organizing a bigger part of their life.
If you enjoy the work we do, we encourage you to please consider subscribing to our paid Substack tier for just $5/month. You will receive an Aesop’s t-shirt in the mail, as well as our sincere thanks.
Finding a handful of paid tier subscribers is absolutely crucial to making this project sustainable in the long run and enabling us to pay venues, musicians, and show staff fairly.
