The Night Before Christmas and a community dinner.
Important Dates:
12/15 Soup Show #5 (Community Dinner)
12/20 The Night Before Christmas and Other Holiday Shorts
12/31 Deadline for End of the Year Fundraiser
Sunday Dec 15, we are hosting a community dinner and acoustic show at my apartment in Greenpoint, you can read more and RSVP at the link above. It’ll feature singer-songwriter friends Hurricane Holly, Old Milk Mooney, and Kyle Rogers. We’ll be making a vegan soup to share with people and accepting donations for the artists.
I’ve been informally hosting these little acoustic shows in my 1 bedroom apartment for about two years. I was coming out of a time when booking shows for other artists was a much more central part of my life. I had started out organizing shows at a pair of local churches in Greenpoint and Ridgewood. The shows were often small and intimate.
However, there was something exciting about bringing people together and creating opportunities for other artists. There is a thrill to watching people trickle into a show and to see it unfold from the back, knowing you played an essential, invisible role in making that happen.
The shows in Ridgewood were particularly ramshackle. We started booking events while the space was still partially under renovation and thin layer of dust caked the pews throughout. Word started to spread about the space and some more popular artists and bookers started coming through. By the time I was finished there, we were hosting events with often well over a hundred attendees.
I was pretty burnt out and frustrated by the end. Artists would often come into the space expecting a more professional setup than what we had to offer and I felt bad about not being able to offer more. I needed a long break from engaging with music in that kind of way.
After a few months, I started hosting these Soup Shows again at my apartment, and they’ve been an important part of rebuilding my sense of self-efficacy as an artist. I’ve made new friends and strengthened relationships with people who have been a part of my life for a while.
If you do want to come today, you are welcome to do so, just RSVP at the link above for the address. Keep in mind, my apartment is tiny and capacity will be very limited. Please bring some cash or be prepared to Venmo a donation for the artists.
This is our last post of the calendar year and we’d be remiss if we didn’t share a reminder about our upcoming show on December 20th. You can secure your ticket here to the performance of our live soundtrack to the Night Before Christmas, and a series of other short films by Polish director Ladislas Starevic. We are also still accepting donations through the end of the year for our End of the Year Fundraiser. We have some rewards set up including a limited run of t-shirts.
